BuffaloGrid is looking for a senior electronic design engineer, who is interested in design for developing countries.

BuffaloGrid makes solar mobile phone chargers with a twist: our solar-power units are provided for free to rural villages in sub-Saharan Africa and India, and people buy a phone charge by sending it a text message. In the future, our systems will bring other services like internet, radio and screens.

Working with BuffaloGrid offers a unique opportunity to design for the bottom billion market, with an award winning team of people who are changing the world a little.

You will be responsible for the electronic development of our units, both from a technical perspective and a user perspective. This will include field visits to our deployment sites and management of production with manufacturers.

Technical skills:

Previous experience of start-to-finish electronic design (prototyping, schematic, board layout, connections, system wiring, safety, test procedures, manufacturing)

Embedded programming experience (embedded Node.js is a bonus, excellent C/C++ expected as a minimum)

Proven ability to create fast-turnaround prototypes

Experience with GSM modems and cellular communication, preferably with at least one cellular product already on the market

A good understanding of MPPT systems and SMPS design in general

Must be an experienced Linux user

Business experience:

Flexible approach to rapidly changing development environments

Strong contributor to technical strategy and an understanding of how this links to commercial strategy

Experience working in a small company is highly desirable

If you are the right person, we are flexible about whether you are full or part-time
